Art as Empowerment: Susan’s Journey of Creativity, Independence, and Advocacy

Susan, a 23-year-old artist, is part of the art group of the Made51 project by WASSA-UNHCR, which focuses on creating art by painting the marble stones. This initiative empowers women by providing them with valuable artistic skills that enhance their creative abilities and increase their employability. Through the creation and sale of art made from stones, wood, and recycled materials like Herati blue glass, women can generate their own income, fostering economic independence and reducing financial dependency. Additionally, participating in these group activities fosters a sense of community and support among women, helping them build networks that can lead to further opportunities. Engaging in creative expression not only boosts their self-esteem and confidence but also allows them to preserve and promote their cultural heritage. Furthermore, artistic expression serves as a powerful tool for raising awareness about women’s issues, advocating for rights, and inspiring social change. By participating in projects like Made51, women contribute to a larger movement toward gender equality and empowerment.
